9/11 Commemoration

The events of September 11, 2001, are forever etched into the history and mission of New York Task Force One (NY-TF1). On that tragic day, 51 members of NY-TF1 heroically sacrificed their lives while responding to the attacks on the World Trade Center. Their courage and dedication represent the very essence of our task force, and we remain steadfast in our vow to honor their memory with every deployment.

The impact of 9/11 extended far beyond the immediate aftermath. To date, over 600 FDNY and NYPD members, including members of NY-TF1, have succumbed to 9/11-related illnesses as a result of their selfless service during the search, rescue, and recovery operations at Ground Zero. At a 2019 World Trade Memorial Wall ceremony, FDNY Commissioner Nigro reminded us of their immense sacrifice, noting “the sacrifice of all who responded on September 11th and toiled for weeks and months at the World Trade Center searching for the innocent lives taken that day.”

In the hours and days following the attacks, New York’s call for help was answered by over 1,600 personnel from 20 task forces across the country.  AZ-TF1, CA-TF1, CA-TF3, CA-TF4, CA-TF6, CA-TF7, CA-TF8, CO-TF1, FL-TF1, FL-TF2, IN-TF1, MA-TF1, MO-TF1, NE-TF1, NV-TF1, OH-TF1, PA-TF1, TX-TF1, UT-TF1, WA-TF1, and the FEMA US&R Incident Support Team worked tirelessly alongside first responders at Ground Zero. Their bravery and unwavering commitment to the mission were critical during our nation’s darkest hours, and we remain forever grateful.

We carry the memory of the fallen—both those who gave their lives on 9/11 and those lost to related illnesses—forever in our hearts. With every mission, NY-TF1 strives to honor their legacy, upholding the highest standards of integrity, courage, and dedication.
